The U.S Open golf Championship is the hardest set up golf tournament in the world of golf.
Why?
The long rough, generally 4-6" long just off the fairway, the bunkering, the fast greens, the crowds are very passionate & can hamper your game with continued pressure, long yardages, windy conditions & & of course self confidence, you need to be extremely confident going into a U.S Open Championship.
We can learn from what the Golf Professionals do at a championship.
Tip #1 The Rough.
By watching the top players in the world we can see how they play the percentages, when in the rough.
What we can learn from this is when you are in the rough choose a higher lofted club such as a wedge or 9 iron, the aim here is to get the ball out. If we go with a lower lofted club we cannot get the ball high enough to get out of the rough. Also with the lower lofted club the grass will grab the clubhead turning it inward & de-lofting the club. So play the percentages, play away from trouble.
Tip #2 The fast greens.
At club level golf we rarely play on super fast greens like the U.S Open on a weekly basis, but if you do heres what to do. If you are faced with a 10 foot downhill putt that is extremely fast, line your ball up off the toe of your putter, this will deaden the ball coming off the putter face too quickly, you will see the ball roll almost in slow motion & it will not race past the hole.
On quick greens always aim to die the ball into the cup, we don't want to hammer the ball at the hole as the next putt might be longer again coming back.
Tip #3 The bunkers.
As with many top golf courses the bunkers can be terrifying to us especially if they are deep & have a high lip on them. When faced with a bunker with a tight pin placement aim to play away from trouble. Rather than try to take the low percentage shot on & leave the ball in the bunker why not play out sideways, I know you are sacrificing a shot but you are not taking another 2 shots to get out. Look for an area where you can get the ball up 'n' down.
Getting a bogey rather than a triple bogey will do wonders to your overall score & keep you in the hunt for glory.
